ARTIST BIO:

Josh Sherman is a hand percussionist who has specialized for the past 10 years in Tabla and East-Indian rhythms. He has studied privately with numerous teachers including several of the leading Tabla masters (inlcuding Pandits Nayan Ghosh, Yogesh Samsi, and Suresh Talwalkar) and has spent the most time studying from well reputed tabla players Jim Feist (American disciple of Ud. Alla Rakha and Pt. Yogesh Samsi) and Pradip Ghosh (disciple of Pt. Kumar Bose), who he has had the honor of performing with on multiple occasions.  He currently performs solo as well as with several groups and has performed with musicians of many different styles from around the world, utilizing the versatility of Indian rhythmic concepts to accompany anything from Bluegrass, to West African dance and drumming, to Anatolian Gypsy Flamenco dancing, to Vietnamese Ca Tru music, and many more.

Current projects include Enchanted Hearts, a 6-piece kirtan ensemble, Global Connections, a 5-piece world fusion ensemble, and the newly emerging project Rudraksh Rhythm Ensemble which represents the culmination of all of his musical as well as some of his spiritual interests and studies.  He also frequently sits in with other groups such as Ancien, a Middle Eastern Fusion group, and Strange Creature and Mayan Ruins, which feature a shifting lineup of extremely talented musicians from the Cincinnati area.

Performance venues of note include Starwood Festival, Tri-C Jazz Fest, Cleveland Museum of Art, Parade the Circle, Severance Hall, House of Blues, and Cain Park. Josh has also developed a method of transmitting core Indian rhythmic concepts to musicians of varying styles, levels, and instruments, and has conducted workshops for all ages on Indian Rhythm Theory and other drum related topics for Starwood Festival, Ingenuity Fest, and for many Passport Project Programs.  He is also a new member of the Nepalese fusion band Druk Fusion Ensemble, and teaches tabla at HIMALAYAN MUSIC ACADEMY in Akron, Ohio.  He was a former trustee of ICMS (Indian Classical Music Society) Cleveland, which organized local performances and workshops in the Cleveland area by some of the leading touring classical North Indian musicians.
